Great rifle with a lot to offer as far as bang for the buck! Would not hesitate to buy again.
I knew this rife/ scope package was not going to be anything special, but I was definitely more disappointed than I expected to be. I bought this rifle specifically for deer hunting, and after some adjustments It will work fine for my purposes.
First the bad: The quality control is definitely lacking on this rifle. The holes on the receiver for the base plates were not drilled even close to square to one another. I almost sent the rifle back to Smith & Wesson, but the holes drilled in the bases where large enough to get the bases square enough for a hunting rifle. The rings still bind the scope, and that bothers me. This will certainly effect accuracy out past 500-600 yards, but I won't be shooting it out that far. The stock looks and feels very cheaply made, and has a length of pull 1-2 shorter than any other rifle I own. I'm 63 and have monkey arms, so a longer length of pull is nice, but that's just a personal preference, you may be different. The safety on this rifle is a joke. It is so stiff that it leaves an indentation on my finger, and after working it back and forth a few times, leaves my finger sore from doing so. Not to mention, it's very loud when you operate it. It's without a doubt the worst part of the rifle. Thompson Center needs to do something different for there gen 2 model of this rifle.
Lastly, the scope. I love Vortex optics, and have several of them, including other budget models, but I would not recommend this particular optic. I really thought this would be the best part of the package, but next to the safety, it's the worst. The scope clarity is poor. I'm not even sure why they make this in a 4-12 magnification because anything above 6 magnification is very blurry. I compared the clarity to several other budget scopes I have and they were all noticeably better. Even the cheapest scope I own, which is a $90 Nikon BDC, totally blew this thing away. The reason I stated that this is a good rifle out to 250 yards is because the clarity of this scope isn't good enough to go much past that.
The Good: When I bought the rifle, I was almost certain the trigger would be complete garbage, but it's actually very good. I have seen many reviews on the internet saying that the trigger adjustment on this rifle is very difficult, but in reality it's very simple. Set the over travel first, and then the trigger weight. The trigger adjustment will not allow you to go below about 5-6 pounds, which was heavier than I like, so I removed one of the trigger adjustment screws, and set the one remaining screw to about 3 pounds using lock tight to hold it in place. I safety checked the rifle, and only got the trigger to go off once out of about 50 times of hitting the butt on a tile floor, and it took quite a bit of force. That is good enough for me. The bolt on this rifle was very stiff when I first got it, bit has smoothed out very nicely. It works back and forth with ease, and doesn't bind like the bolt on my Savage Trophy Hunter.
I recently purchased this combo and I was quite impressed with what I got for the money. The scope is more than I expected. I took it out on the opening day of the rifle season and got my first Buck for the year. The accuracy was simply amazing. I'm an avid fisherman but decided to try my hand at hunting this year and this rifle was recommended to me. I processed my rebate requests immediately after I picked the rifle up and my prepaid cards were in my mail-box in less than two weeks.
