Built rugged for military, police, and law abiding citizens, the Mossberg 500 Tactical offers mission-ready shotguns for any scenario. This exclusive model includes a forearm strap for managed recoil, as well as a breeching barrel.
This Mossberg 54124 tactical pump is listed as a model 500, but is actually more like a 590-series with its hardware and takedown process. Traditional model 500s usually feature a captive screw in the under-barrel architecture and a sealed magazine tube with a female bushing at the end for the barrels male takedown screw. This model 54124 shows a more modern 590-type DNA with a removable magazine cap and a magazine tube spring and follower that can be easily removed by prying out the pliable magazine spring retainer. This opens up a world of user-friendly possibilities for adding a +1 replacement magazine extension cap, upgrading the magazine spring/follower, or for general cleaning and maintenance. This is the #1 reason why I bought this model 54124 home defense pump, since I am not a big fan of the limited original 500 magazine tube design. With the 16 cylinder bore barrel and welded 2.5 door-breach muzzle device, the barrels overall 18.5 length balances and points very nicely.
The Mossy #54124 tactical is essentially a next-gen version of the Thunder Ranch model, without the logo, and substituting a longer synthetic stock with a 14 length of pull versus 12.5 for the Thunder Ranch. To give this home-defender some unique personality, I replaced the original stock with a Mossberg pistol grip`;` replaced the strap forearm with a tri-rail version`;` added a 600 lumens Streamlight Polytac LED light on a Blackhawk side mount to the portside rail`;` installed a Midwest Industries single point sling mount aft`;` plus added a BCM short vertical grip on the center rail for two-hand push/pull weapon hold security. The final functional accessory was adding a short piece of Velcro loop on the port side of the receiver and a removeable four-shell Esstac shotgun shell card for some spare ammo. When loaded with low-recoil 00, #1 or #4 buck, I believe that I have created one of the ultimate made-in-USA home defense tools that is totally bad to the bone. And if you ever run out of ammo in a zombie attack, the razor sharp pointed door-breacher muzzle break will cut someone a new one for sure. The model 54124 is not listed on Mossbergs 2022 website, so this is going to be a collectors item someday soon. Grab one while you can.
