Don’t usually do reviews. I have had this for a couple years now, taken several deer, have no problem with stock actually fairly stiff. Will consistently shoot around the magic 1” with 150 Federal Power Shock,150 core lock,150 Seller & Bellot, 168 Black Hills Barnes, 165 Outback Game King.
Bought the Vortex package, considering what the optics & mount hardware cost, & the rebate. I have less in the rifle than the cost of threading the barrel. Trigger was heavy but with a little work it is around 3.5 #.
Bought the Compass 2 with bladed trigger for granddaughter for Christmas. It has really good trigger. Review it after more experience.
Excellent rifle, super accurate just as advertised. . high performance at a super friendly price. It came with a Vortex 4-12X scope for $350. This is a great rifle to hunt with.
Worked flawless out the box. Shoots great. My intial impression of the stock was wow Ive never seen a stock polymer this thin and flymsy. After shooting it I have no issue with the performance of the stock. Lightweight and very low recoil.Nice etchings on barrel, quality look and feel. And the sale price from SOSS made this a great purchase. And the deal on scope made it a no brainer. Nice Vortex scope by the way.
I love this rifle and would defiantly recommend it to anyone looking for a great out of the box shooter.
Got it at the end of 2017. My plan was to slowly upgrade it to a better gun, as many did with the Savage Axis etc. However: 1. 1:12 twist rate is very limiting. 2. You can't just swap barrel without a gunsmith. 3. Horrible trigger. You can't really adjust it to less than 5lb. 4. The rotary magazine is so wide, that it makes ANY after market stock a joke. Now I'm planning to get a Savage.
Ordered the Thompson Compass .308 and Vortex scope. The entire ordering process including the transfer at a local shop was easy and quick, considering I ordered during the holidays.
The rifle and scope are quality items for the sale prices I paid.
Thompson Compass is a Smith & Wesson line, the barrel and bolt are S&W quality`;` however, the plastic stock furniture feels to be mid-low grade, but for my needs this is not an issue. I have not sighted this in yet and will update my review once I have spent few rounds. I will be shopping/purchasing from Sportsman's Outdoor Superstore again. Thanks for the great service!
Purchased on special for even more exceptional value. Went for the Vortex add on too. Stock was better than I thought it would be from other reviews, still threw it into an Oryx chassis for the range anyways.
I have the same rifle in 308. After getting my scope zeroed and when hunting a few times, on my last hunt I've got to wondering why my stock was getting loose. So I put it in the vise and took out the 2 screws and saw that there was no lock tight or any thread sealer. So after taking 5 deer and a box of shells they loosened up so be careful, and if you buy this rifle put lock tight on stock screws.
I ordered one of these guns due to the price. Well so far I haven’t been let down. Quality of rifle is more than expected at this price point. Being a guy that likes quality in my firearms, I’m a little hard on reviews.
The only negative thing I can say about the rifle so far, is the cheap stock TC puts on this weapon, but this is an easy fix with a Boyds stock. I hope this helps someone on a choice you're struggling with. Well worth the money.
Great accuracy right out the box. Sighted in only 3 rounds. Smooth bolt, threaded barrel, lots of rifle for the price. You're basically paying for the scope. Great Deal!
When I took the gun to the range I was somewhat apprehensive, but that changed quickly. It took several shots to cite in my 4 x 16 Nikon. After that I was shooting 1 inch groups at 100 yards . I was totally amazed. What a good shooter for such a cheap price.
Sportsman's Outdoor Superstore made it quick and easy to make the purchase. I am now going to buy the 223/5.56 model and hope it’s as good as my 308!
These guys did a fast, wonderful job and helped me out ordering my TC Compass 300 Win Mag..ordered last thurs, here the next wed..thank you folks and i will send more of my business and others i know, Happy Thanksgiving...
Was very impressed with the accuracy of the gun. First trip to the range was shooting 1 inch groups at 100 yrd. A nice Burris scope and cheap Wal-mart ammo seemed to be a good combination.
My favorite rifle to date. Very accurate shooting 1.5 inch groups @ 100 yards with a Simmons eight point scope I had in gun cabinet . Getting 6.5 Creedmoor next ??
Was looking for a cheap .308 to get into some longer range shooting. Purchased this and put a cheap Bushnell 4-12 hunting scope on it as it was what I had laying around. Got a chance to sight it in today and was able to hit slightly less than 1 inch groups at 100 yards using federal gold match 168 grain. I shot grom prone position with a bipod and rear squeeze bag. Action isn't super smooth, but not terrible. Trigger adjustment is fairly easy, I believe I have mine the lightest it can go, wouldn't mind taking it a little lighter. Recoil's what you would expect from a light .308. All in all its a good shooter and the price is insane. Mine was sub 200 with the rebate. Great gun for the price, couldn't ask for better at this price point. Compared this to my Savage Axis II Kryptek with a Vortex HST 4-16x44, the savage shot slightly tighter groups at 100 yards, but I would consider it pretty similar in performance at that range.
With bulk components and first shots downrange, this rifle is awesome!! Less than 1/2 in groups when sighting in at 50 yards! Great customer service and fast shipping!
This Compass rifle was the first 308 I have ever owned. I am used to firing 223. After I got over the mule kick of the first round, I started tuning in the scope and after firing 30 rounds, I finally got two rounds on a 1/2 wide target bulls eye and had the two holes touching each other. Incredible accuracy even though it was at only 50 yards. It even made my shooting look good. I was only using cheap ammo and still had this amazing result. The inclusion of the Nikon scope sure makes this a sweet deal. I will be buying from Sportsman Outdoor again.
