U.S. Navy Mk 5 Signal Pistol (Sedgley, WWII-era) Compact, single-shot maritime flare launcher adopted by the U.S. Navy in 1942 for emergency and night-signal duties.
Model / Marking: Signal Pistol, Mark 5 – “USN” molded into the diamond-checkered Bakelite grip; military part & drawing numbers roll-stamped on the frame.
Manufacturer: R. F. Sedgley, Inc., Philadelphia, under Navy contract.
Caliber / Bore: 10-gauge Very flare (approx. 25 mm), smooth-bore steel barrel.
Action: Break-open, single-shot with double-action trigger – tip the barrel forward to load, close to lock, fire, extract manually.
Construction: Parkerized steel barrel and frame, cast-alloy sideplates, oil-resistant black Bakelite grip panels for corrosion resistance at sea; lanyard ring in butt.
