Let me start with the disclaimer: I am NOT a rifle expert. Actually, this American Tactical Alpha MAXX .300 Blackout is my first AR-style firearm, so my technical qualifications for writing this review are approximately zero. I bought the 10.5" .300 BLK pistol because I wanted something compact, fun at the range, and a good way to start learning the rifle/AR world without spending a fortune. Before the first trip, I did the responsible thing: cleaned it, lubricated it, watched a few videos, asked a million questions, and then prepared myself for all the problems the internet had convinced me were coming. After all, this is not an expensive gun, I was using inexpensive range ammo, and apparently every affordable AR on the internet is supposed to explode, jam every third round, or require $1,500 in upgrades before it can successfully launch a bullet downrange.
Well...100 rounds later, I have absolutely nothing interesting to report, and that's the best compliment I can give it. Zero failures to feed, zero failures to eject, zero drama. Pull trigger, BANG, repeat. I wasn't using premium ammunition either. This was cheap ammo specifically purchased to get the first 100 rounds through the gun and start breaking it in. The Alpha MAXX simply ate everything and kept going.
Being completely new to this platform, I can't tell you whether the trigger is 7% better than something costing three times as much or debate gas systems over a glass of expensive whiskey. What I can tell you is that the gun feels solid, was incredibly fun to shoot, and gave a first-time AR owner a completely trouble-free first 100 rounds.
Cheap gun + cheap ammo + inexperienced shooter = zero problems. That's pretty difficult to complain about! I'm looking forward to putting a few hundred more rounds through it, learning the platform, and seeing how it performs over time. For now, this beginner is VERY happy with his purchase.
