(1 out of 5) When it worked it was great.
by from Brewster, NY on

It has a consumer safety recall. See https://www.smith-wesson.com/safety/recall/m-p15-22-consumer-safety-alert I bought the rifle to teach my son how to shoot. Was working for a bit but then started repeatedly jamming. I cleaned it twice and still getting jams. Then an accidental discharge with no finger in trigger guard. Just went off on its own. Thankfully in a safe direction of course. I reached out to Smith & Wesson Customer Service. We shall see what their response is.

(5 out of 5) A lot of fun
by from STAFFORD, VA on

I enjoyed this rifle, I put different types of ammo and it ate everything. My wife and daughter love it. I added a cheaper scope and It is awesome shoot more than 25 yrds.

(5 out of 5) Nice rifle
by from Scottsdale, AZ on

A great plinking rifle. Well made no issues. Excellent for a first rifle and 22lr ammo doesn’t break the bank.

(5 out of 5) Super Great Plinker
by from Pompano Beach, FL on

Great little rifle, I find that it runs great using the CCI AR Ammo. I have put over 1000 rounds thru the rifle without any problems. The S&W MP15-22 takes it's place with the rest of my keepers. I love to shoot this gun.

(5 out of 5) Great rifle
by from Denver, CO on

This is a great rifle, I have put around 300 rounds through it and not a single issue. I know it’s not a lot but it’s promising. Easy to clean and love the flip up sights it comes with. Would recommend to anyone who enjoys the AR platform but wants to shoot a lower cost .22lr price per round. Love my 5.56 but this is a lot nicer on the wallet.

(2 out of 5) S&W M&P 15-22
by from Texas City, TX on

I own one of these rifles. They're ok. Not very accurate, but I'm sure S&W never intended it to be. Maybe they did, I don't know. What I do know is S&W's customer service is terrible. I've called them on three different occasions, and all three occasions I got the same don't give a damn attitude from three different reps.
The first time I called was about the butt stock being way too loose. The rep said, ok that's how it is on that rifle. I guess that makes it ok. Then he acted like I was putting him out when I mentioned that I do not think it is normal for the stock to be that loose. He responded, with a notable scoff, by telling me to send it in and they will look at it and that it will be 6-12 weeks turn-around time. I said, no thanks I'll deal with it.
The second time was for the latest recall. I ordered the tool to measure the bolt and then after two weeks after I were to receive it I still hadn't. I called them again and got the runaround. Again, their attitude was that it'll get there when it gets there. They recommended that I reorder it online this time. I took their advice and its been at least two weeks since the second order and I have yet to receive it. This is the last S&W anything that I will purchase. I'll only purchase from whomever provides good customer service. And accurate firearms. Savage Firearms comes to mind.

(5 out of 5) Excellent rifle!
by from Phoenix, AZ on

I have owned this rifle for 9 months and put ~more than 1000 rounds. Very accurate, lightweight and fun to shoot. So far seems to be very reliable but only time will tell.

(2 out of 5) The final verdict isnt in yet, but...
by from Westminster, CO on

I have a problem, or rather my new rifle has a problem. It doesnt work. In the first 300+ rounds, I had several failure to fire and failure to eject problems. AND the 25 round magazine would only accept 23. I was pissed off, but then I remembered how old my Winchester Super-X .22LR ammo was. So I took the weapon home, cleaned, lubed and inspected everything thoroughly. I also bought some fresh CCI Mini-Mags not recommended for Performance Center rifles but officially blessed for this one. If anyone knows a better factory load than CCIs, let me know. Back to the range, and at least I could now fit 25 rounds as advertised. Within the first 13 rounds, 2 two failed to load, the bolt jamming the cartridge diagonally with the bolt still partially open. Not wishing to damage the weapon, myself or others, I left. This time really pissed off. I got off the phone with S&W customer service this morning, and they just emailed me a FedEx return label. It seems I wont have to pay for shipping ore repairs if its a warranty issue. IF!!! By the way, theres roughly a 3 week turnaround or long guns right now. Cant shoot it. Wont sell it. Now really seriously extremely pissed off. I realize that the .22 caliber is not the most well conceived and executed round on the planet, but Ive owned other rifles and pistols that worked either flawlessly or nearly so. Hence this unhappy shooter will NOT recommend this to others.

(2 out of 5) S&W Poor customer service
by from AZTEC, NM on

I had written a review on the Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22. The rifle works great after i found the fix for the failure to eject the empty shells on You Tube. However, I had contacted S&W customer service for the first time on in early July, the last time i talked to them they said they would send return shipping label via USPS. It is now August 17th and I have still not heard from S&W. Gun is nice after had to make the repairs, S&W customer service is non existent...

This will be several part review:

1. Sportsman's Outdoor superstore service was great, I had to delay the shipping on my gun due to my FFL dealer being out of town, Sportsman's was able to accommodate me with no problems, I give them a rating of 5.

2. The M&P15-22, when I took it out to shoot it I could not get more that a couple of shots before it would jam. I took it home and dissembled it and cleaned it to perfection, took it out to shoot, same problem. By now I am hating the gun, it would not fire more that 3 rounds before it would jam the expended cartridge. I called Sportsman's and again they were great, gave me the number to S&W. The rating on the gun at this point is a 0, I have no use for a gun that will not perform as advertised.

3. I called S&W customer service and explained the problem, they told me they would email a return label and instructions. I waited for 3 days and did not receive an email, I called S&W back and they said they would resend the instructions, I again waited 3 days with no email. I called customer service a 3rd time, we decided that they would mail me the return label and instructions, that was on July 23rd, it is now Aug 1st and no instructions or return shipping label. I was looking around on You Tube and found a video that explained exactly what my problem was and how to fix it. I did the repairs outlined on the You Tube video and now the guns is working without fault, I have put 200 rounds through it with no malfunctions. With a company as big as S&W I do not feel that I should have to go to YOU Tube to find the problems and correct them. The Item should work correctly out of the box. My low rating is a direct result of the customer service that I did not receive from S&W.

3. If you purchase on of these guns, be prepared to have to repair it yourself as S&W customer service was very poor performance for me.

4. Now that the gun is working properly, I want to report that is is fun to shoot and will be an asset in my 3Gun training.

(5 out of 5) Excellent first rifle
by from Scottsdale, AZ on

I love this gun. I've only ever had handguns, so this is my first ever rifle. I wish this was my first gun purchase. Handguns can be snappy, especially sub-compacts, but THIS gun is an absolute pleasure to shoot. I had a few issues the first 2 times I took it to the range. I was having failure to eject or failure to feed at least twice each magazine. I oiled it up a whole bunch each time and maybe it was just needing to be broken in because I haven't had problems since then. Be patient, I guess. This gun is so user friendly. I took my 8 year old daughter to the range and it was her first experience with shooting and she loved it. She begged me to take her back the very next day and loved it even more. It took me a while to get the sighs the way I suppose I need them but once adjusted, I am getting about a 1-2 inch grouping at 70ft with all 25 rounds. I wish my indoor range could go further. I expect to get much better over time and am considering a red dot sight or a scope to see just how much better grouping I can manage. I typically shoot 100+ rounds at the range and the cost of ammo is less than $5. What cheap fun! My handgun ammo costs at least 4x that and aren't anywhere near as fun to shoot. Until I bought this baby AR, I was really struggling to enjoy my experience at the range and I had even let my membership lapse. I would only go once every 3-6 months, just to make sure my every day carry was still working well. Now with this gun, I renewed my membership and I go 3-4 times per week. I might even buy another one because I am so impressed with it.

(5 out of 5) Great .22lr
by from Raleigh, NC on

Probably the best OFTB setup I've witnessed in a rifle. Very light despite the appearance.

(5 out of 5) Wow!
by from Ruston, Louisiana on

This gun is exactly like its big bother ARs. And a blast for all ages to shoot.

(5 out of 5) Great!
by from North Olmsted, OH on

Ordered this m&p 15-22 on a Saturday. It arrived at my ffl dealer Tuesday and picked it up Wednesday. Great price to practice instead of using AR-15. Will order another firearm again.

(5 out of 5) 1st Online Gun Purchase
by from Ossipee, NH on

As for the rifle itself, its fine. Smith & Wesson did an excellent job in building a dedicated AR-15/22. I was able to install aftermarket parts without issue and everything feels solid. As far as Sportsmans Outdoor Superstore, this was my first online gun purchase and it went smoothly. I had the rifle in hand within a week of purchase. No issues at all and I would definitely buy from them again.

(5 out of 5) Best AR platform .22
by from Seattle, Washington on

Sportsmans Outdoor Superstore was helpful answering my questions when I called. The rifle shipped quickly, and arrived exactly as described. Everything functions like an AR. Mag eject, safety, charging handle, bolt etc. A threaded and solid barrel was a big plus for me when comparing this rifle with other AR style .22s. The sights are great, grouping at 75 yds was satisfying. The rifle cycled flawlessly with several kinds of ammo for me. Bottom line, if you're getting an AR style .22LR, this is the one to have! I bought 2 !!

(5 out of 5) Excellent Purchase!
by from Jacksonville, FL on

This was the first rifle I ever bought and I guess I made the best purchase someone can make for a first timer. The ease to handle, the weight, ergonomics and the recoil, all work together to give you a great experience. Let's not forget the price - it's as affordable as can be within the margins of profitability. No regrets here!

(5 out of 5) Great gun, great accuracy, great time!
by from Topsham, Maine on

Arrived on time and for a price that could not be beat anywhere I looked. Online, big name stores, and small local shops this was the best price. Took it to the range today for the first time. Just oiled the bolt lightly before shooting. Put 150rds through it of 4 different ammo. Only 2 FTF and that was with Remington .22 Thunderbolt which I had heard gives certain semi-autos trouble. I blame it on it being the cheapest of the ammo I shot. Whether it was a mag dump or patient single shots, it was absolutely flawless and a tack driver to boot. Sighted in at 50yrds no problem. Only change will be a new butt stock and maybe grip, nothing else needed. I highly recommend esp for those getting your kids trained & used to the AR platform like I am with my girls. Enjoy!

(5 out of 5) Ammo Eater
by from Prescott, AZ on

What a great rifle. This thing has ate everything I have tried in it: CCI Tactical, Rem Golden Bulk, Fed Target Bulk; hundreds of rounds. NOT a single ftf, jam, ect. PERFECT!! love it.

(5 out of 5) Great company great firearm
by from Chicago, IL on

I was looking for a smaller firearm and was leaning towards purchasing a Glock 43. I did a little research and checked out these guys and decided to go with the shield. This company is great and is the only place I use when ordering online. The shipping was quick and the customer service was great. I received this firearm in 2 days and just let off 100 rounds yesterday. It feels great and I would suggest this firearm to everyone. I just placed an order for another one and look to make a purchase of a XDM in the next couple months.

(5 out of 5) I got it
by from Chicago, IL on

I got this rifle quick. I ordered to begin teaching my son about this area so that he begins to develop a like for it. I haven't been able to take it to the range yet but plan on it this weekend possibly.

(5 out of 5) S&W M&P AR15 22 Sport Plinkmaster
by from Coral Springs, FL on

Just let me say, this is the neatest little rifle of all time. I have fired over 800 rounds through it with only three malfunctions. 2 were the cause of the Ammo duds, and after 500 rounds without cleaning, it did fail to eject a spent shell one time. I did notice that if you choke up on the front stock and have big hands like I do, be careful not to let your hand rest against the bolt release, as this will cause the bolt not to hold open after the last round is fired. This happened to me,  and was my fault, not a problem with the rifle. For the price that I paid Sportsman's Outdoor Superstore for the M&P, I saved so much money that I could buy 2 extra magazines and a Blackhawk rifle case. Again, a super rifle and a super great deal. Thank You, SOSS

(5 out of 5) Wait until you shoot it.
by from Odessa, MO on

All you will be saying is WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!! this gun just nails 2 inch groups from 35 yards with the sights working perfect. Rapid fire hold good groupings as well. This is just a fun gun and great for some cheap plinking. Great quality and great price. I smile every time I shoot it. Smith and Wesson yet again produced a great product I stand behind. The customer service was quick as expected.

(5 out of 5) Super Fun Plinkster Rifle.
by from Detroit, Michigan on

One of the more fun .22s I've owned. Chews through the worst of the worst bulk pack ammo without issue. So far I've been surprised at how well it works with a variety of .22 ammo. Does not appear to be particular at all about which brand it likes, the way .22s like to be. Would buy again. If you are just looking for a dedicated plinker and don't already have an AR that you want to put a .22 upper on.

(5 out of 5) Fun, inexpensive training platform
by from North Las Vegas, NV on

Added a Rise 140 trigger and cmc anti walk trigger pins. Making this platform that much more fun. SOS had the best price, and their handling was well with in expectations when offering free shipping.

(3 out of 5) Very picky with ammo
by from Atlanta, Ga on

I'm still looking for the right ammo... was told CCI might be my best choice. Fun to shoot though.

(3 out of 5) Lots of problems
by from Saratoga Springs, UT on

Ive had to send mine back to S&W twice within the first year of ownership. I couldn't even finish a magazine without 5 or more failures to eject. After sending it to them for a fix the first time back out it had 3 out of battery fires. The 3rd blew the extractor off. Back to S&W it went. Still waiting to get it back. I just wish it worked as good as every one says.

Great rifle, price was the best anywhere. Ran 200 rds thru it first day, five different brands. No issues whatsoever. Great gun

(5 out of 5) A fine rifle
by from Bethlehem, PA on

Very impressed with this rifle. It's extremely light but shares many features of more expensive ARs. Being a .22 felt recoil is practically nonexistent. You won't begin to appreciate it until you take it to the range. Very accurate and no failures of any kind. No complaints. Buy it!
